Provisos:
- Each time you comment on a post by an F-SF guest author (in the series starting tomorrow) your name will get an additional entry into the draw (only 1 new entry per F-SF author post, however);
- The name included in the book is to be your real name;

[Note: If you don't want your name included in the draw, just write "n.i.d." (not in draw) after your comment.]
Have fun—I look forward to reading your comments and to the “grand giveaway” at the end of today. (And don’t forget to check back to see if you’re a winner!)
Now let’s paint today RED for The Heir of Night AU/NZ!
I have already won a ARE copy of The Heir of Night and I can not wait until it gets here so i can start reading and I would love to be entered for some of the other fantastic prizes.
I wish to congratulate you on your book release that’s a big deal:-)
Mette–your ARE is on its way and should reach you very soon … thank you for joining in the AU/NZ celebration today!
Many many congratulations Helen and thank you for these AWESOME giveaways! π And even the Draw to Give Your Name To A Character?! WOW!!! Fingers crossed! I can’t wait to read The Heir of Night! (BTW I read Thornspell and I LOVE it.)
Giada-so glad you enjoyed Thornspell! Your name will definitely be in all the draws and the competition. π
Yay! Congrats on the Australian release!
I’ll be off to the bookstore in 30 minutes and will see if they have one of the versions in today.
Thanks Sullivan M. Be sure to tell your bookstore the error of their ways if they do not have The Heir of Night yet. π
Fab news re-release! Red cover looks awesome!
Thanks, Charlotte!
Yay! I’m so excited about this book, can’t wait to get my hands on it. Love the red version of the cover, beautiful.
It’s fabulous, isn’t it?
Congratulations on publishing not just in AU/NZ but in the US too. Great to see a writer from down under getting on. Looking forward to getting my grubby little mitts on a copy.
Thank you, Paul—needless to say, I am looking forward to your getting your grubby mitts on it as well. π
That is indeed a stunning cover. I think a trip to the bookstore is in order π
It is very staunch, just like the heroine, Malian of Night, but also captures something of her vulnerability (I feel).
Due to Machiavelli being a close personal friend I have already read “The Heir of Night” – and found it a compelling read. My biggest complaint is that book 2 is at least six months away.
Oh, and I thought it was that you do reviews for SFFANZ π … but very glad you found it a “compelling read” Woot! (Let’s loose her inner author). And I am working very hard on WALL 2 (in between launch parties!)
Whoo Hoo congrats on the relese Helen I love the cover and the book sounds fantastic I will be out shopping on the weekend and will be looking for it
Have Fun
Helen
Thank you, Helen–for all! π
I like the simplicity of the red cover.
I also like the message that it sends!
… And the way the “i” in Heir, in the title, looks like a dagger! I thought that was so cool when I first saw it.
Cool competition and I’m looking forward to picking up the book. I’m heading in to Wellingtown this afternoon, I’m sure I’ll find it on Lampton Quay somewhere π Congratulations on publication day!
If Lambton Quay is to preserve its claims to being the heartland of NZ’s culture capital, then it will undoubtedly have a copy! π
SIGHTING! So I went over to the University Book Shop. I took a look in the “New Releases” section – no Heir. So I went over to the SF&F section – no Heir. I was mentally composing a grumpy Letter to the Editor when I decided to ask at the Book Enquiries desk, and lo! I mean Lowe! they had three copies in stock (two now π ), but they were shelved under “NZ Fiction”.
Congratulations Helen!
Thank you, Joff–I hope you told them to shelve under SFF if they want to find their target audience! But thank you for the sighting, the sale—and getting the red cover up on the front page of my website last night in time for all the excitement!
Congrats on the release. It looks great and I love the red version of the cover.
Thank you, Donna—I think it speaks very much to the “dark treachery and conflicting loyalties” of Robin Hobb’s cover quote. Although, having said that, am not sure Malian(the Heir of Night) looks that conflicted … π
Congratulations on the launch of “The Heir of Night”. I really liked reading Thornspell and am looking forward to reading Heir soon.
June, thank you for all your constant, and also consistent, support for for my writing: I hope “your” Heir will be in your hands very soon.
Congratulations on the release of the Heir of Night. Your giveaways sound fantastic. I love the cover design and look forward to reading it!
Orbit, my AU/NZ (and also UK, next year) have been incredibly generous with the giveaways—and it is fun to have so much to share with Heir’s wellwishers! Thank you for commenting, Debbie.
Congratulations, Helen! I’m so thrilled for you, and I can’t wait to get my hands on that juicy, red cover!
Yup, we’re painting it red today, Wen! Thank you for joining in the celebration.
I headed over here due to a dirty, great plug from Alan Baxter and I likes what I sees. Congratulations on the launch and I’ll definitely be back at lunchtime to plumb the depths of your site in more detail.
Thanks Damien—may you also like what you read! π
Congrats on the launch, Helen! I hope it goes gangbusters for you.
Alan–thank you so much for your support—I am very much looking forward to featuring your guest post on the blog tomorrow.

*~*~*~~*~* pARTY Z~*~*~*~*~*~~
Thanks for joining the party, Katrina: I have to say we’re partying up a storm at present! But definitely do keep an eye on the site: not only will there be the very exciting guest FSF authors series, starting from tomorrow, but I will update Heirnews as it comes through.
Congrats on the release! I love the cover, looking forward to reading it when my preordered copy arrives!
Rob: clearly you are a gentleman and a scholar! π
Hi again π
Hi Sam–enjoyed your comment on my Monday post. π
Congratulations Helen!
We’re having friends over for dinner tonight and you will be a virtual guest! Your success will definitely be mentioned.
Jan—thank you! I am looking forward to being your virtual guest, eating your virtual dinner! π
Hi Helen, congratulations on the launch! Wooot! Love the red cover π I can’t wait to read the Heir of Night!
Hey Ika–thank you for joing the party. It was lovely to meet you at Worldcon!
Grat’s on getting published again Helen! Looking forward to reading the latest! It’s always a thrill when you get published (both in a general way, and when YOU get published we’re all happy!)
Again! YAY π
Thank you, Kathy–and you’re right, getting published is a blast, not just becasue I get to have parties like these, which is definitely a buzz, but because at the end of the day, for me it’s all about the story and publication means that my little story (ok, some people are of the view that Heir is a pretty big story) is getting “out there”, I hope to add a little more net happiness to the world …
Congrats again. Both covers are great, and I’m looking forward to seeing the inside. That’s my reward for getting a synopsis in the mail to New York.
And we all need those rewards! May you enjoy the inside, too … π
I know nothing about computers so to check, if I post a comment here on this blog…as I am doing now…. then I have a chance to win your impressive looking book? If I post right here? In this little area? : )
Seriously I hope you have many success across the globe with this and all future books. Now I just hope I can win a copy and read it as quickly as possible!
Maria, you definitely did the right thing and now here you are—right here on the blog and in to win. π Thank you so much for your best wishes for The Heir of Night’s success!
Whoohoo. Fingers crossed now. I must say this was a great idea to celebrate the release. I’m stuck between hoping to(very very hopefully) win both your books or the group of 5 from Orbit. Hence the posting twice! I laughed when I saw the name in the book idea because I tried to imagine my name and failed. It would be truly bizarre in a fantasy setting (that is NOT a hopeful hint for me to win because that would be mean) and not in a good way.
Anyway I was commenting to ask if you have a favourite between the 2 different covers. I’m looking at both and truly think that both are excellently executed.
Hi Maria, You will note that I have reserved the right to “adapt” your name for a Fantasy character, while printing your full name and the winning of the competition in the acknowledgments section–a “cunning ploy” on my part perhaps, but necessary, I believe, becasue of the very point you make … As for the covers, I like them both equally but in different ways. To me the blue cover speaks to the brooding power and “strange magic” that Robin Hobb points to in her cover quote, all very much part of The Wall of Night world. The red cover speaks more to the adventurous, action-packed aspect of Heir, while still encompassing—as I noted in my response to an earlier comment below— the “dark treachery and conflicting loyalties” [Robin Hobb] of the Wall of Night.
Hi Helen,
Posting in the right spot this time, would love to get my hands on one of your books as a present for my girlfriend.
ps I’m sure I’ll be reading it after her π
Cheers
Good to see you in the right spot, Jason. π
I am very excited that it’s finally launch day! I picked up a sample of The Heir of Night at Worldcon and really enjoyed it, and have been waiting to read the rest of it ever since. It hadn’t come into stock at Borders when I checked at lunch yet (although it had made it onto the computer system), but I will try another couple of bookstores tonight. Fingers crossed!
Katrina, I think/hope Borders will have it for you very soon as I know that they definitely had it for Worldcon. And of course, you may also win one of the gift sets on giveaway. π
Congratulations Helen! I can’t wait to see your book in dazzling red in a bookshop near me – Look forward to buying it and settling in for a story that will transport me to strange and exciting lands. Hope you’re enjoying Australasian launch day – Cheers!
I am enjoying it, Rebecca! I am even wearing black and red, which of course are also “Canterbury colours”—for those who may not know, Christchurch is the main city in NZ’s Canterbury province, where the red and black combination is always very much in evidence at major sporting events … as well as major book launches, of course!
Yay, yay and yay, I say! Happy book day dear Helen. I’m a little late to the party, but I come bearing virtual cake! And it’s chocolate…
Triple yay, Mary—what could be better? Ok, you got me there, (virtual) chocolate cake would have to be the very best. π
Wow, congrats Helen, on your launch day. Your book sounds amazing, and I can’t wait to read it, whether it’s from the bookstore or a competition. Thank you for the competition!
Thank you for pointing me to the right post, Helen.
Happy release day!
Hi Helen, I posted a comment on the 7th but with the time change I guess it was out. I have spent my book budget this fortnight, and so can’t go buy it until next pay day. I am looking forward to reading it. Thanks for the opportunity to win such awesome prizes.
Cheers,
Bec
Rebecca, You are one of several people who commented on Monday’s blog post in error. Given that you clearly commented in good faith, intending to be part of the heir of Night launch giveaway draw, what I have said is that so long as you re-post here (which you have now done) before the draw occurs later in the day—when I have the scrutineers present—then your name will go into the “sorting hat”. So you’re good—and believe me, I understand all about stretching the book budget from pay day to pay day. π
We had a member recommend Mira Grantβs Feed at our book club tonight. This is a wonderful competition! I am so used to competitions being open to Americans only. I kind of feel like doing an aussie aussie aussie chant lol
No, I can’t think of an ANZAC one LOL
I know … why is that do you think? But good to see you made it here “in time”.
Love love love all the excitement and can hardly wait to have a read!! Congratulations Helen on a wonderful achievement!!
Looks like I’ve missed out as I can’t seem to find my original post but here I am, better late then never. Sorry for not responding sooner but I was in the process of putting photos into my local show and then I had to go to work. Well that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it. Hope I’ve managed to get into the sorting hat too.
Julia, I am terribly sorry, but you have missed out this time—but there will be other giveaways in future (if not so big) and there is still the “get your name in WALL2” competition running throughout the FSF guest series (currently scheduled to run until 24 October). I also blog on the US based Supernatural Underground on the first of every month and quite often do giveaways associated with that: if the giveaway comes from my US publisher then it’s US only, but I always try to put up something international to “go with”, because the blog has a large international following.
Okidoki, no worries.
