”A Memory of Light” Giveaway—the Draw Result for the Second Giveaway Book
Yes, it’s 31 January 2012 & New Year’s Eve—but it’s also time for the result of our second draw in the A Memory of Light giveaway.
You will recall, of course, that I have not 1 but 3 copies from Hachette NZ to give away to Australian and New Zealand readers, and this is the draw for the 2nd book.
Everyone who commented on the first giveaway post, here, to tell me “why you are a fan of the Wheel of Time series”, plus those who commented again on last Monday’s post, here, re “Who is your absolutely favourite character in the Wheel of Time series—and why?” have been entered—or re-entered—in the draw.
So without further ado…
The winner of the 2nd ‘A Memory of Light’ draw is: [drum roll!] —
Tim South (the 24th commenter)
Congratulations, Tim
Tim, if you email me via my website on contact[at]helenlowe[dot]info with your postal address, I will pass it on to HachetteNZ so they can forward you the book.

But Again, It’s Not Quite Over—The Draw for Copy 3 Continues!
As explained in the previous two posts, I’m making the draw for 1 of the 3 copies each week over 3 weeks—with the 3rd and final draw now being a week away on January 7.
If you’ve already commented on the first, December 17 post, or again on December 24, then your name will still be automatically entered into the final, January 7 draw. (And I know I’ve said this before, but I have really enjoyed the answers to both questions, just for the sheer range and interest of the answers. So do keep them coming. 😉 )
But if you would like your name to be entered a third and final time, or you have just discovered the giveaway and wish to enter, then simply answer the (easy!) question below.
And here it is–the third & final question:
Who is the adversary or villain in the Wheel of Times series that you most love to hate?

Notes re the Giveaway:
- The giveaway is resticted to readers resident in Australia and New Zealand only.
- Each draw will be made using Random.Org with the results posted on the blog on 24 and 31 December, and 7 January respectively.
- If the winners have not contacted me by Friday 11 January at the latest, I shall re-draw for any of the books that are unclaimed.
- Hachette NZ have confirmed that the books are embargoed until January 8, but they will forward the winning copies after that date.
There are certainly a lot of villains to choose from but I think I will choose Elaida mainly because although nominally she was on the side of the Lighther weak minded foolishness almost fatally divided the Tower at a time when the Aes Sedai should have preparing for battle. Sure she was being manipulated by the Black Ajah but she gave them plenty of material to work with.
(she also gave the Seanchan the secret of Travelling)
Great choice, Janet!
My choice would be Couladin. He acts by deceit and propaganda in order to further his own status, which is against how the rest of the aiel act. This leads to him dividing the aiel when they would, and should of rallied behind Rand
Aran’gar for me.
A terrible weapon in the Aes Sedai camp able to hide amongst the servants and weild the male half of the one power almost at will without being suspected.
Loved the sections in the books where She was included, spent whole chapters on the edge of my seat wondering if she’d be discovered or do something fatal to the cause.
Jaret Byar, because he was just plain bat**** crazy! Completely blinded and off the rails. Also, I think, the most ‘real’ of all the villains because he had no special powers, couldn’t channel, was not one of the Forsaken, but believed so fervently that he was doing the right thing.
Ah! Where to start, where to end. But there are no beginnings nor endings to the turning of the wheel of favourites and hated.
Firstly, I’m amazed no one has even mentioned the good ol’ dragon reborn Rand Al’Thor. I know he’s been through a tough time of late, but no matter how much people love Mat’s character, they forget that one of Mat’s best attributes is his loyalty to his mates (hint hint – show Rand some of the love his mates do people). Maybe it’s just that Rand has been losing the plot and becoming harder to love. Or is it his too literal translations of old prophecies simply insipid. Anyway, surely you got to love him to hate him.
If WoT becomes a movie though, I’m sure the super hot bad girl Lanfear will be my favourite love/hate character! Smokin!
PS: sorry Helen I originally posted this in the wrong section – oops!
That’s ok, Pete–I have deleted the previous comment, just to keep things ‘clear’, but in fact I’ll accept any legitimate comments so long as they’re on one of the giveaway posts, in the spirit of keeping this a celebration of the series and Robert Jordan’s achievement, now being so ably finished by Brandon Sanderson.:)
This one is not as cut & dried for me. That’s probably because most of the traditional villains are such a dissapointment – relatively speaking. That’s been one of my pet peeves in WOT, characters and situations that are built up so well, combined with time to marinate in my mind, so much so that they have yet to meet my expectations. (Demandred & Taim/Black Tower situation – you are the last 2 chances I have to actually not be let down by a villain in WOT who has been DECADES in the setting up!
In the meantime I have redefined the term villain to mean the character who elicits a “SERIOUSLY, DO I HAVE TO READ MORE ABOUT YOU AND YOUR STUPIDITY AND ARROGANCE AGAIN?!”
So having redefined it thusly, there are two villains who I love to hate. First is Egwene whose muley insistence that she knows better than The Dragon Reborn in the last book reminded me what a trial she was to read in the first 6 books. I had momentarily forgotten after her Tour de Force in The Gathering Storm.
But nothing holds a candle to the undisputed champion of teeth grinding induction, the lady of lobotomy, the priestess high of making me want to pluck out my own eye. She turned one of the favourite characters for me to read into an unbearable trial. She is the one and only Faile Bashere.
grl
I have to second Elaida. Another bigot, I guess!
Padan Fain twisted and dark like a villian should be. Unique in his power and very dangerous.
