“O Frabjous Day” Reprised
Two weeks back, I talked about some of the “frabjous” moments in the writing life, such as when (unexpectedly at the time) I returned to an unsatisfactory chapter ending expecting to do much remedial work, then found I could resolve the difficulty by the simple expedient of removing the final paragraph.
Problem solved — because the preceding paragraph did all that was required. “O frabjous day”, indeed. ๐
Endings often present challenges in the writing process, so only a short time previously, when celebrating another moment-of-frabjous via Twitter, the celebration also pertained to an ending. In that case, I ended a w.i.p. chapter thinking I still had another chapter to write, in order to reach my intended destination for the section. Here’s what happened, per the tweets:
I love those mornings when I wake up with an alternative ending ‘download’ to last night’s completed chapter. In this case, I believe a ‘better, stronger’, crisper finish. Not ‘faster’ tho’ given rewrite, however crisp… ๐
Yesterday morning’s revised chapter ending inspiration for #TheWallOfNight #4 WIP not only delivered a better outcome in situ, but has probably saved me an additional chapter in manuscript terms. So all hail those overnight muse interventions. ๐
Yes, indeed, to those muses — definitely delivering another “O frabjous day” moment.
(And no — canna do without the emoji action in m’tweets, #justsayin’ )

every day we inch closer to the book being on our hot little hands. I am itching for a re-read but I need to remember when it is expected. I have to leave about a year between re-reads to make it satisfying but I want to be able to just pick up the last and continue on…. I will have to go back to read your post on the possible eta of the book. and I have a few others I want to revisit too so all is good. So nice to not have post-grad study handing over my head and my time is my own.
You really do — & the last section actually represented five different threads coming together, so not even inching in that sense.:) But I would still bide a wee for the reread, unless you want to do two, that is, as even once I complete there will be a hiatus until publication, especially in these Covid times. I will do another update before the end of the year, but I want to have a run at the next section first. Enjoy that ‘own time’, Jacqui.
I” hold off then. I’m in the mood for rereads rather than new unless something catches my fancy. I’ll rummage in the boxes marked sci-fi and see what takes my fancy. This story of living in balance may be the thing atm as it has a hopeful message about living in balance with nature and the world so this might next then https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adiamante
It’s an age since I’ve read any LE Modesitt Jnr! Ursula Le Guin’s SF & Fantasy works are also always on base for themes of balance and harmony with nature. If you’ve never tied it, I recommend Nicola Griffiths’ “Ammonite” for eco themes. Enjoy your reading, Jacqui.
Does your vorpal keyboard ever go snicker-snack?
Very occasionally — although more often it’s a case of spending too much time among the “slithy toves”, requiring much “uffish thought” in order to banish the “manxome foe.” ๐
Banish away!!
