The Wall Of Night #4 (“The Chaos Gate”) Update: January 2022
Yes, it’s finally time for The Wall Of Night #4 (working title: The Chaos Gate) update.
Back in July I reported being on the cusp between the endgame setup and the final denouement, when all the character arcs and storylines will resolve (where they have not done so already.)
And no, “resolve” does not mean “dies”: i.e. WALL #4 is not a Shakespearean tragedy where all the main protagonists usually end dying messily in the final scene. So perhaps I should have written, “resolve, whether happily or unhappily.” 😉
In July, I also reported that I was going to have to rejig some earlier material, an exercise that turned out to be considerably more major than I anticipated. All setbacks are, of course, always the author’s responsibility, but the three C’s—aka Characters Behaving Badly, continuity (with earlier sections but also the previous books), and contrary, if not downright cantankerous muses—also play their part.
However, all the gnarls and passages-of-arms did eventually resolve (that word again), allowing the story to roll onward. There is still a large part of the denouement to write, but Kalan is currently in the right place, Malian is well along the path, and as of today I commenced the final instalment of the heralds’ arc. So I can report steady progress.
I’m sorry I can’t offer more specific information at this stage, but with the writing at a critical stage I don’t want to jinx anything by getting ahead of myself. So it’s “steady as she goes” time—but I have pencilled in 7 April for the next update, if not before. (All writing digits pretzelled.)
Remember, too, that the places to check for updates (if they’re not at the top of the masthead) is under “About My Books” & “About What I’m Doing” (under Categories in the far-right-hand sidebar.)
Thank you, too, as always, for staying the course with me and for continuing to check in. It’s greatly appreciated, as are you.
HYN 2022, Helen and best wishes for the completion of book #4!
I have pre-ordered the e-book version in March 2020….
Courtsey of Amazon, I was informed of a change in the release date of the book. It’s currently set to end Jan 2023. It’s not the first time the publisher changed the release date of this book.
Fingers crossed for your muses, etc. to stay productive
Really looking forward to finally reading the final installment of the TWoN Series!!
Hi Christine: Happy New Year to you, too!
Thanks so much for the best wishes and the preorder, especially since preorders are reputed to give a huge boost to a book & series’ traction with new readers and in the marketplace generally.
I have made it very tough for the publisher in terms of the release date, because the changes must be laid at my door for taking so long over this book. They and Amazon et al are braver than I in terms of prognostications, but I am always mindful of not getting offside with those contrary muses.
All of which probably leads you to understand why my New Year libation and invocation were “To the Muses, that they may be kind.”
Malian! Kalan! Heralds! so exciting! Thanks for the update.
And the words were flying off the keyboard and into the manuscript this morning, so woo-hoo! 😀
So exciting! I cannot wait to read it though of course good things tale time and I will in fact wait as long as it takes. And anyway, the longer it takes the more times I can re-read the first three books!
All the best for this, hopefully less covid impacted, year of 2022!
Nick
Well, we can hope, Nick, re the Covid–and I do, but am not holding my breath either!
I’m so glad the series is rereadable and the book news exciting—roll on April 7 and more good progress news, say I (fingers to keyboard and also doing that “hope” thing again, aye!)
All I can say is: YAY! And good luck. Keeping my digits pretzelled for you as well.
The more pretzelled digits the better, for certain-sure: thanks for yours, Marion.:)
Exceptional fantasy series so far, have read the three books released so far 3 times already and will start from heir of night again when book 4 is released. Very much looking forward to it!
Thanks so much, Joe. 🙂 I shall continue writing on!
I fear to leave a comment lest you are diverted from writing to answer it; so no reply needed, but just to wish you a happy 2022 and may these annoying north-easterlies we are having at the moment keep you indoors writing and the inspiration to resolve the twisting fates of the major characters,
nga mihi, Sue
Thank you, Sue!
You need never fear to leave a comment because replying is a fun thing to do on a coffee break or when the muses are insisting on downtime before they reward me with the next piece in the story puzzle. Hearing from readers is always motivating, too.:)
“We concur” by the way, about those nor’easters: not only strong and consistent, but the wind chill factor was definitely bleak. :-/
I received the Dutch translation of book one from my Sister as a birthday present quite a few years ago. While going through my collection recently I came across it and remembered how much I enjoyed it. It had me wondering why I’d never seen a next instalment, so I went and got the kindle versions of the first three books in English. Definitely looking forward to reading the conclusion of this excellent series.
Hi Ton, I’m so glad you’ve been able to get Books 1-3: thanks for dropping by to let me know. Plus, there’ll be a mini update tomorrow, 7 February, which is always a sure sign of progress. 🙂
Helen, I love your books so much. It is the standard I hold up when I talk about great writing. I read them every six months or so, and am currently reading Daughter of Blood. Your writing is what I aspire to in my own writing. Your world building and characterization is impeccable and brilliant. I am looking forward to reading the fourth. Keep up the great work!
